Effective Software Engineering Manager Notes - Chapter 13

On Stanier (2020), 13th chapter:

Stoicism in the workplace

The author uses The Stoic Trichotomy of Control to postulate something important about things you have some, but not complete control over. We should set internal goals that are under our control, otherwise we're bound to be frustrated.

I.e.: You shouldn't worry if your current project will be a success, you should make sure you and your team do the best work they can.

How to avoid work stress taking over

  • Be disciplined about pings. Have fixed times to deal with incoming messages via chat, email or phone
  • Set aside some time for R-mode thinking. The author recommends 10%
  • Always schedule 85% capacity max, external requests are bound to happen
  • Use your time outside of work to RELAX. Sleep 8 hours, exercise and be present (the author refers to mindfulness as a useful concept here)
  • Try to move around while working. Walk around 5 minutes every hour, take walking meetings, etc.
