Storyworthy Notes - Chapter 2

On Dicks (2018), chapter 2

Good stories contain change

A good story contains change. The protagonist should not end up the way they started. This does not necessarily mean huge revelations, things can be small and banal. Nonetheless, a change must happen.

Good stories are mundane

Good stories are mundane. Also, always tell stories about yourself, never, ever, tell other people's stories. Vacations and drink stories are usually unremarkable, they hold no inherent value. You'll find good material at any place, it's all about perspective and about what you observe in your daily life.

The Dinner Test

A good rule of thumb is always tell stories as you would at a dining table. Avoid gestures and expressions that might seem unnatural, like starting your story with "BOOOM!" or using overly poetic language.
